We have exciting news! We’ve won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise

The Queen's Award for Enterprise

Here at Ziffit.com, we’re proud of our achievements and have been very lucky to have been shortlisted for a number of awards over the years – and we’ve won a few too! Today it was announced that we’ve won The Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2017. The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise recognises and celebrates business excellence in the UK.

We’re super excited about it! To be recognised in this prestigious award category is something that means a lot to us here, so we’ve thrown a little party internally to celebrate.

Ziffit is part of a bigger company that has several brands. Helping the environment is a big part of what we do and the whole business works hard to ensure that we’re doing our bit to help protect it. To date we’ve recycled over 4 million items and helped prevent them going to landfill.

As one of the top 2 re-commerce companies in the UK, we have a large team dedicated to keeping the business running effectively and efficiently. This has helped us to grow and expand rapidly in the past 10 years, bringing employment and opportunities to the local community.

We also have a large team dedicated to keeping the business running effectively and efficiently which has helped us to grow and expand rapidly in the past 10 years. Bringing employment and opportunities to the local community.

Books to Blockbusters – that don’t disappoint

 Books to Blockbusters

By Rebecca Reed and Sarah Kneath

When a movie release is announced and it’s been adapted from a book, there’s always a lot of conversation about it. Who will play the lead character(s)? How will they film *that* scene? And inevitably… Will it be as good as the book?

We’ll admit that we’re a pretty cynical bunch here at Ziffit.com HQ, that’s why we’ve been racking our brains to think of some adaptions that didn’t disappoint and make us want to hunt down the screenplay writers and re-read them the entire book cover to cover – pointing out all the mistakes. (We look to you “The Golden Compass” and dare we say it “The Da Vinci Code” …)

As you can see, it’s pretty sparse – so feel free to let us know your thoughts and if we’ve missed any.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games

“I volunteer as tribute!” A well-known phrase uttered by one of the most heroic female literary role models in this modern age. Katniss Everdeen, the girl on fire, the Mockingjay. Thanks to the film, it propelled Jennifer Lawrence straight into the spotlight. There are subtle differences from page to screen in the first of the trilogy, these were put in to make sure the film flowed. The Hunger Games movie and book trilogy do stand as equals and in our opinion are up there with another obvious teenage fiction series, Harry Potter, although we don’t think we will be seeing a theme park around The Hunger Games trilogy. That may be too scary and dangerous.

The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

One of the greatest science fiction novels all except the Star Trek/Star Wars sagas, when this popular tale was turned into a film, people were super excited. There are differences in the book and movie, even to the point where parts of the movie do not feature in the books. The film stands out with its brilliant casting of Alan Rickman as Marvin the Robot, but if you prefer to curl up with the book, we highly recommend it just for the differences in story that swallows Arthur Dent.

Holes by Louis Sachar

Holes

Stanley Yelnats, the name that resonates with so many children, whether that be from the film or the book. Some students may have studied this in school, most of us did (definitely showing our age here – gulp!). We spent many a lesson analysing each chapter and then out rolled the TV and we got to watch the film starring the child superstar Shia LaBeouf. The book and movie are pretty much identical, the changes are minimal, just a few character tweaks, which gives the film a touch of reality, this makes it a great book to movie adaptation.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

The book and film for this are equally as creepy and have left some of us in the office with nightmares clearly some will never recover from. From the books to the movie, there were a few minor changes which we reckon was all part of making it less scary for their target audience. However, the “other mother” will remain a terrifying character in our eyes – in both versions!

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

One of our all-time favourite films, admittedly some of us did read the book after we had watched the films. However, Steven Spielberg didn’t miss much out, and with many books to movie adaptations, it is very hard to fit the story into a 2-hour film. The book creates all the tension and the horror in the exact same way the film does. You begin the story with the scepticism of “this is going to go well”. A few characters from the book had their roles switched for the movie, however, we all agree that Lex is equally as irritating in page form and on-screen.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

What a book – what an absolutely breath-taking, wonderful and heart-breaking book. When it was announced that this was being made into a film, we admit, we were worried… Luckily the film lives up to our expectations. The cast are perfect and capture the relationships so well, particularly the relationship between Liesel and Hans (played by the incredible Geoffrey Rush, of Pirates of the Caribbean fame). It has just the right amount of melancholy but that all too powerful undertone of hope. Both are tear-jerkers and both will leave you with “wet-neck”.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

This is a slightly different one, as it’s actually memoirs of the life of Louis Zamperini, who was an Olympics distance runner in the 1930’s, later commissioned in to the United States Army Air Force during World War Two.

The movie was produced and directed by Angelina Jolie and written by the Coen Brothers, so naturally there was a lot of hype surrounding it. Zamperini is played by Jack O’Connell (yep, for those old enough to remember, he played Cook in Skins back in the day). The film is powerful and sticks (for most parts) to the truth and doesn’t suffer from that little bit of glitter that Hollywood always tries to sprinkle on a lot of biographical films. If anything, it’s not gritty enough – with some criticising the movie for not detailing the harrowing experience the stranded soldiers experienced at sea. And for some part, we agree – the book is harrowing and at times quite disturbing, but the film falls slightly short of that.

A Theory of Everything/ Travelling to Infinity by Jane Hawking

Much like “Unbroken” this is again a biographical movie. The Theory of Everything was adapted from the memoir of Jane Wilde Hawking, ex-wife to theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. Okay – we’ll admit, we’ve not read Hawking’s ‘Theory of Everything’, we’re just not that clever. Some of us (okay one of us) has read Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen. The film perfectly captures the lives of the two young students perfectly. Their journey as they struggle to come to terms with Stephen’s illness. The critically acclaimed movie was nominated for loads of awards and earned Eddie Redmayne the coveted award of Best Actor at the Oscar Academy Awards. Now we’re not saying you have to read the book with this one, but we’d definitely recommend the film.

There are of course other books to movies that are great and are many people favourites. So in the interest of scope, we’ll just give them an honourable mention here:
The Godfather, The Shining, The Notebook, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the Gene Wilder version, not Johnny Depp’s (sorry)…

Never mind “don’t judge a book by its cover” the key thing to remember is not to judge a book by its movie. Tell us your favourite movie adaptations and why in the comments.

The Great British Christmas Declutter

The Great Christmas Declutter

Wasteful Brits purge homes of 66 million bin-bags of stuff in preparation for Christmas

  • Our research finds a third of Brits clear out at Christmas to create space for new gifts
  • The UK receives 81 million unwanted presents each year
  • One in 10 of these gifts end up in landfill

The extent of Christmas waste is revealed, with the latest figures show UK households are set to clear out a massive 66 million bin-bags worth of stuff – and that’s just in preparation for the festive season.

We found that almost two-fifths (38%) of British households will roll up their sleeves for a pre-Christmas clear out, with a third (33%) of Brits confessing this is purely to create space for new gifts.

Despite purging their homes to make space, almost two-thirds of people surveyed are expecting to receive unwanted gifts that they will never use.

In fact, most Britons receive a total of 81 million unwanted presents annually, with each household receiving three on average. Shockingly, one in 10 of these will end up in landfill.

Perfume topped the list of gifts most likely to be re-gifted or thrown away, while clothing and gadgets came in at a close second and third respectively.

Christmas Gifts

Our eCommerce Director Paul Treanor said Ziffit said: “I was surprised to find out just how many unwanted presents Brits accumulate each year. It’s also astonishing to see that, as a nation, we get rid of such a huge amount in the run up to Christmas, only to make space for more unwelcome stuff.

“Encouragingly our research showed that the nation’s first port of call was to take unwanted gifts to a charity shop. However, a third of the people we surveyed admitted they put these presents away and forget about them, while shockingly one in 10 Brits simply throw unwelcome gifts in the bin.

“We know from our customers that unwanted gifts can, in fact, be a real lifeline for your finances, with plenty of money to be made from selling presents online – and keeping them out of landfill.”

* The survey commissioned by Ziffit.com surveyed 2000 people across the UK in November 2016

Journey back to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Unless you’re a muggle who’s been living under a rock for the past few months, you may have noticed that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is back on the big screen this week. That’s right, J. K. Rowling has written an entirely new screenplay dedicated to the life of writer and adventurer, Newt Scamander.  People are excited. And we are too.

Not much is known about the full story of the film, the Warner Brothers bosses have been very good at keeping schtum. But what we do know is that the story is set in New York in the mid 1920’s, where Scamander has just arrived after completing his trip around the world on the look-out for magical creatures. It is here that he meets muggle Jacob and all hell breaks loose. Okay, not hell – just a whole bunch of magical and dangerous beasts. Oh em gee, what would Hermione say? We don’t know for certain, but we think it will take more than a quick disarming spell to fix this one.

It is because of this exciting new film, that we’ve decided to take a look back over the Harry Potter phenomena from the past 15 years. A franchise that spans books, DVDs, CDs, Lego, theme parks, clothing and that’s just the tip of the magical iceberg, there is more merchandise than you can shake a replica phoenix feather wand at.

Before we get carried away with the excitement, let’s bring it back to the products we know most about here at Ziffit.com and the cash we’re offering for them*.

It’s really important to ensure that you review our quality checks before you submit any of your items to us, as we cannot return anything that comes in and is then rejected.

Below is a handy guide to ensuring your items are all accepted.

TRADING IN YOUR CD’S, DVD’S AND GAMES…

As a rule, we can only accept items with a barcode number (EAN) as this is a unique 13 digit number used to catalogue saleable goods.

CDs DVDs and Games will not be accepted if:

The items that are sent in are not identical to what has been submitted in your trade – make sure the EAN’s match up.
The items are not in the original casing
They are copies or fakes – they will be rejected and disposed of so original discs only please [image]
The discs don’t match the cover sleeve/case – take care in ensuring that they all match
They are heavily scratched discs and don’t play perfectly.[image]

Take time to ensure that all covers, sleeve notes and instructions (games) are included and not damaged or defaced in any way. This includes water damage and any hand written inscriptions.

TRADING IN YOUR BOOKS…

We can only accept books that have an ISBN number. The ISBN is a numeric 9, 10 or 13 digit number that is unique to each individual book. It appears underneath the barcode on most books.

We cannot accept books if:

The cover has sustained heavy damage.
ISBN doesn’t match the item you submitted during your trade.
Not all of the pages are intact [IMAGE]
Pages are missing or heavily discoloured.
Pages contain writing, annotation or answers (textbooks). [IMAGE]
There is any water damage [IMAGE]
All original supplements such as discs or gifts are not included.
The original dust jacket hasn’t been included

Please also note that we cannot accept or return any additional items that were not scanned and are included in the box(es) you send on to us. So make sure you double check what goes into the box before sealing and posting to us.

Follow these points above and you won’t go far wrong. If, however, you’re still unsure about whether an item will be accepted – send a couple of photos and a description to qualitycheck@ziffit.com and we will aim to come back to you within 3 working days with our advice.
