The Great British Christmas Declutter

The Great Christmas Declutter

Wasteful Brits purge homes of 66 million bin-bags of stuff in preparation for Christmas

  • Our research finds a third of Brits clear out at Christmas to create space for new gifts
  • The UK receives 81 million unwanted presents each year
  • One in 10 of these gifts end up in landfill

The extent of Christmas waste is revealed, with the latest figures show UK households are set to clear out a massive 66 million bin-bags worth of stuff – and that’s just in preparation for the festive season.

We found that almost two-fifths (38%) of British households will roll up their sleeves for a pre-Christmas clear out, with a third (33%) of Brits confessing this is purely to create space for new gifts.

Despite purging their homes to make space, almost two-thirds of people surveyed are expecting to receive unwanted gifts that they will never use.

In fact, most Britons receive a total of 81 million unwanted presents annually, with each household receiving three on average. Shockingly, one in 10 of these will end up in landfill.

Perfume topped the list of gifts most likely to be re-gifted or thrown away, while clothing and gadgets came in at a close second and third respectively.

Christmas Gifts

Our eCommerce Director Paul Treanor said Ziffit said: “I was surprised to find out just how many unwanted presents Brits accumulate each year. It’s also astonishing to see that, as a nation, we get rid of such a huge amount in the run up to Christmas, only to make space for more unwelcome stuff.

“Encouragingly our research showed that the nation’s first port of call was to take unwanted gifts to a charity shop. However, a third of the people we surveyed admitted they put these presents away and forget about them, while shockingly one in 10 Brits simply throw unwelcome gifts in the bin.

“We know from our customers that unwanted gifts can, in fact, be a real lifeline for your finances, with plenty of money to be made from selling presents online – and keeping them out of landfill.”

* The survey commissioned by Ziffit.com surveyed 2000 people across the UK in November 2016

Sell your Harry Potter CDs, DVDs, games and books

Journey back to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Unless you’re a muggle who’s been living under a rock for the past few months, you may have noticed that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is back on the big screen this week. That’s right, J. K. Rowling has written an entirely new screenplay dedicated to the life of writer and adventurer, Newt Scamander.  People are excited. And we are too.

Not much is known about the full story of the film, the Warner Brothers bosses have been very good at keeping schtum. But what we do know is that the story is set in New York in the mid 1920’s, where Scamander has just arrived after completing his trip around the world on the look-out for magical creatures. It is here that he meets muggle Jacob and all hell breaks loose. Okay, not hell – just a whole bunch of magical and dangerous beasts. Oh em gee, what would Hermione say? We don’t know for certain, but we think it will take more than a quick disarming spell to fix this one.

It is because of this exciting new film, that we’ve decided to take a look back over the Harry Potter phenomena from the past 15 years. A franchise that spans books, DVDs, CDs, Lego, theme parks, clothing and that’s just the tip of the magical iceberg, there is more merchandise than you can shake a replica phoenix feather wand at.

Before we get carried away with the excitement, let’s bring it back to the products we know most about here at Ziffit.com and the cash we’re offering for them*.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Get Cash for Unwanted Stuff

It’s really important to ensure that you review our quality checks before you submit any of your items to us, as we cannot return anything that comes in and is then rejected.

Below is a handy guide to ensuring your items are all accepted.

TRADING IN YOUR CD’S, DVD’S AND GAMES…

As a rule, we can only accept items with a barcode number (EAN) as this is a unique 13 digit number used to catalogue saleable goods.

CDs DVDs and Games will not be accepted if:

The items that are sent in are not identical to what has been submitted in your trade – make sure the EAN’s match up.
The items are not in the original casing
They are copies or fakes – they will be rejected and disposed of so original discs only please [image]
The discs don’t match the cover sleeve/case – take care in ensuring that they all match
They are heavily scratched discs and don’t play perfectly.[image]

Take time to ensure that all covers, sleeve notes and instructions (games) are included and not damaged or defaced in any way. This includes water damage and any hand written inscriptions.

TRADING IN YOUR BOOKS…

We can only accept books that have an ISBN number. The ISBN is a numeric 9, 10 or 13 digit number that is unique to each individual book. It appears underneath the barcode on most books.

We cannot accept books if:

The cover has sustained heavy damage.
ISBN doesn’t match the item you submitted during your trade.
Not all of the pages are intact [IMAGE]
Pages are missing or heavily discoloured.
Pages contain writing, annotation or answers (textbooks). [IMAGE]
There is any water damage [IMAGE]
All original supplements such as discs or gifts are not included.
The original dust jacket hasn’t been included

Please also note that we cannot accept or return any additional items that were not scanned and are included in the box(es) you send on to us. So make sure you double check what goes into the box before sealing and posting to us.

Follow these points above and you won’t go far wrong. If, however, you’re still unsure about whether an item will be accepted – send a couple of photos and a description to qualitycheck@ziffit.com and we will aim to come back to you within 3 working days with our advice.

Fun facts about Ziffit.com

Here at Ziffit we have received 1470 tonnes in the three years we have been in operation that equates to the total weight of 210 African Elephants and 294 Asian Elephants! I don’t think our warehouse would hold that many elephants at all!

Since we opened in 2013 we have seen over 7 million items come through our website!

First item ever traded:

Richard Exley – Grandmas and Grandpas (Book). This little read features some charming stories told from children about their Grandparents.

Most popular CD/DVD/Book and game we have received:

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (DVD) – wonder what Captain Jack Sparrow would think of that?

Ziffit to the (Pet) Rescue!

We had a bit of excitement at Ziffit Towers last week when our intrepid Ziffit staff opened one of our customer’s boxes to find a rather lonely little moggy, all curled up and feeling somewhat poorly.

miracle-cat-1.jpg

Image from BBC News

It’s hard to believe but little ‘Cupcake’, as we later found out, had climbed in and snuggled up without the owner noticing. She then sealed it up and handed the box to our courier partner and spent several days wondering where she had gone.

Amazingly, 260 miles later, we (ziffit.com) open the box and found the little tyke in a sorry state.  We’re a quick-thinking bunch down on the South Coast and so we fetched her some water and called the RSPCA to whisk her away to a vet for some proper care.

The owner was relieved and delighted to find out that Cupcake was found.  A local vet took charge of her and pronounced her to be on the mend, if not a little dehydrated and shaken.

“We’re used to opening our customers’ boxes and finding all kinds of books, CDs and DVDs but this is a new one for us.”  Said Paul Treanor, eCommerce Director of Ziffit.com.  “Our staff were worried but we called in the specialists and informed the owner who was more than a little relieved.”

As much as we loved helping little Cupcake – please do not send cats in with your ziffit.com trade!

Blur vs Oasis – Battle of the Bands

ZIFFIT_OASIS_2

The nineties saw the surge in BritPop acts dominating the airwaves. This led to a number of high-profile rivalries between bands, desperate to make their mark on the British music scene.

We’ve finally solved the two decade long argument: Who was better – Oasis or Blur? We’ve delved into the Ziffit archives to finally bring you the truth and after twenty years of rivalry we can announce that Blur has finally won the Britpop battle over Oasis.

Oasis - Battle of the Bands

Noel and Liam Gallagher – Oasis

We discovered that people throw out seven times more Oasis CD’s than that of their rivals Blur.

The Oasis albums that Brits are most keen to say farewell to in their spring-clean are “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?” coming in at first place. With “Stop the Clocks” and “Heathen Chemistry” not far behind.

But it’s not just Blur’s back catalogue that’s in demand, the band recently reformed and are releasing their first album in 12 years – The Magic Whip.

Blur performing live

Blur – performing live

Paul Treanor, eCommerce Director at Ziffit said: “I was personally taken aback at the number of Oasis CDs being sold on compared to Blur. There’s no accounting for taste and I will be holding onto my Oasis CDs, but Blur clearly seems to have won this battle of the bands by a long shot.”

If you’re looking to trade in your unwanted Oasis or Blur CDs and DVDs, head on over to Ziffit.com. It has never been easier. Simply download our app from the below and take 4 easy steps to earning cash for your used stuff:

*Figures are based on items scanned to sell by Ziffit over the past 12 months. They show that people using the Ziffit app or website scanned seven times more Oasis CDs for sale (3823 in total), than all of Blur’s albums (576 in total were scanned).
