The Great British Christmas Declutter

The Great Christmas Declutter

Wasteful Brits purge homes of 66 million bin-bags of stuff in preparation for Christmas

  • Our research finds a third of Brits clear out at Christmas to create space for new gifts
  • The UK receives 81 million unwanted presents each year
  • One in 10 of these gifts end up in landfill

The extent of Christmas waste is revealed, with the latest figures show UK households are set to clear out a massive 66 million bin-bags worth of stuff – and that’s just in preparation for the festive season.

We found that almost two-fifths (38%) of British households will roll up their sleeves for a pre-Christmas clear out, with a third (33%) of Brits confessing this is purely to create space for new gifts.

Despite purging their homes to make space, almost two-thirds of people surveyed are expecting to receive unwanted gifts that they will never use.

In fact, most Britons receive a total of 81 million unwanted presents annually, with each household receiving three on average. Shockingly, one in 10 of these will end up in landfill.

Perfume topped the list of gifts most likely to be re-gifted or thrown away, while clothing and gadgets came in at a close second and third respectively.

Christmas Gifts

Our eCommerce Director Paul Treanor said Ziffit said: “I was surprised to find out just how many unwanted presents Brits accumulate each year. It’s also astonishing to see that, as a nation, we get rid of such a huge amount in the run up to Christmas, only to make space for more unwelcome stuff.

“Encouragingly our research showed that the nation’s first port of call was to take unwanted gifts to a charity shop. However, a third of the people we surveyed admitted they put these presents away and forget about them, while shockingly one in 10 Brits simply throw unwelcome gifts in the bin.

“We know from our customers that unwanted gifts can, in fact, be a real lifeline for your finances, with plenty of money to be made from selling presents online – and keeping them out of landfill.”

* The survey commissioned by Ziffit.com surveyed 2000 people across the UK in November 2016

Sell your Harry Potter CDs, DVDs, games and books

Journey back to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Unless you’re a muggle who’s been living under a rock for the past few months, you may have noticed that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is back on the big screen this week. That’s right, J. K. Rowling has written an entirely new screenplay dedicated to the life of writer and adventurer, Newt Scamander.  People are excited. And we are too.

Not much is known about the full story of the film, the Warner Brothers bosses have been very good at keeping schtum. But what we do know is that the story is set in New York in the mid 1920’s, where Scamander has just arrived after completing his trip around the world on the look-out for magical creatures. It is here that he meets muggle Jacob and all hell breaks loose. Okay, not hell – just a whole bunch of magical and dangerous beasts. Oh em gee, what would Hermione say? We don’t know for certain, but we think it will take more than a quick disarming spell to fix this one.

It is because of this exciting new film, that we’ve decided to take a look back over the Harry Potter phenomena from the past 15 years. A franchise that spans books, DVDs, CDs, Lego, theme parks, clothing and that’s just the tip of the magical iceberg, there is more merchandise than you can shake a replica phoenix feather wand at.

Before we get carried away with the excitement, let’s bring it back to the products we know most about here at Ziffit.com and the cash we’re offering for them*.

The Ziffit Guide to Selling Books Online

Books blog 2

The Internet is a pretty wonderful thing. Sure, there are a few issues here and there, but it’s worth remembering the impact it’s had on communication, social mobility, education and of course shopping.

But for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Therefore, when something is purchased online, if Newton is to be believed, something else should be sold. That’s where things can get tricky. In the case of books, most of us are used to collecting them, handing some on to friends or giving to charity. After all, they don’t have any intrinsic value after they are used, right? WRONG.

Books are great. They can be enjoyed time after time and by any number of people. There are first editions from Dickens, Austen and the Bronte sisters that fetch tens of thousands of pounds – and they’re over 150 years old! Sure, Kerry Katona’s life story or the latest Mills & Boon might not quite be in that league, but it doesn’t mean they are worthless…necessarily.

That’s why Ziffit.com exists – to let you know what your stuff is worth. No fuss, no fees and no obligation, just enter the ISBN and get a value. But hold on, we’re getting ahead of ourselves. How can you sell your books online?

Step 1 – Which Books are Surplus to Requirement

Your first decision is possibly the hardest, which books are you ready to part with? Whether it’s a question of space or simple finance, choose your titles wisely. They could be almost brand new or a few years old, textbooks or paperback fiction.

Step 2 – Where to Sell

That’s easy, Ziffit.com. Okay so there are a few alternatives, but why use the rest when you can use…well, you know.

Step 3 – How Much are They Worth?

That all-important question. The best thing about our valuations system is that it’s so quick. You won’t be left for days, hours or even minutes. Just enter your ISBN or use our free app to scan them all in and find out what  they’re worth in a matter of seconds. If you’re happy with an offer, keep on scanning, if not you can delete it from your cart at any time.

Here are a few quick examples (accurate as of April 4th 2014)

  • Finished with Fergie? Alex Ferguson: My Autobiography by Alex Ferguson£2.92
  • Ready for a Diet? Mary Berry Cooks by Mary Berry£3.06
  • Looking for a new obsession? Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire 7 Book Set£11.24

We’re not going to charge you or ask you to fill in endless forms just to get a valuation. Ziffit is supposed to be easy to use and that’s the way we like – hopefully you will too.

Step 4 – Selling Your Books Online

Nearly there now. Assuming you’re happy with the quotes we’ve provided, now it’s time to actually sell those pre-loved books. Our registration and checkout process is remarkably straightforward, but do check out our FAQs or get in touch if you have a query. The best thing about selling online is that you can do it at any time, from any location (in the UK at least) and even in your pyjamas – if you so wish.

No need to lug all that stuff to the shop only to find out that they don’t want half of it. Payment can be sent directly to your bank, through a PayPal account, in the form of a cheque or even as a donation to your favourite charity. This way you can still help those great causes from your own home.

Step 5 – Package it up and Send it Off

Once your sale is complete, you just need to get your books to us. The two options we currently offer are a courier collection or straightforward Collect+ drop-off. The first is pretty self-explanatory, just choose a date and we’ll arrange collection. The second simply requires you drop it off at a local Collect+ store.

So there you have it, five simple steps to getting cash for your books. Don’t forget, you can also include CDs, DVDs and Games at the same time. The more the merrier.
